New York for witches, wizards and magic-obsessed muggles

New York might not have Diagon Alley (yet), but look closely, and the city is full of magic. From wizard-approved shops and Fantastic Beasts filming locations to old libraries, hidden symbols and enchanting attractions, this is a city that rewards the magically curious.

New York is chaotic, theatrical and a little bit unreal – which already feels very on-brand for a wizarding adventure. It’s also the setting for ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’, home to an official Harry Potter shop and packed with buildings that look like they were designed by someone definitely in possession of a magic wand.

If you’re visiting with a love of magic, fantasy or the Wizarding World of Harry Potter specifically, this guide will help you track down the most bewitching corners.

The Harry Potter Shop New York (aka magic HQ)

Let’s start with the obvious, and arguably the crown jewel.

The Harry Potter Shop New York, just off Fifth Avenue, is the largest wizarding shop in the world, and yes, it’s every bit as exciting as it sounds. Wand displays, Honeydukes, house merchandise galore – you’ll want to give yourself time here.

The Butterbeer Bar Experience

Included with New York Pass, the Butterbeer Bar Experience is an absolute must. You’ll step inside the bar area and enjoy the famous wizarding drink (non-alcoholic, sweet and dangerously drinkable) while soaking up the immersive details around you.

It’s one of those moments where you forget you’re in Midtown Manhattan and not sitting in a cosy café in Hogsmeade.

Fantastic Beasts filming locations to spot in the wild

If you’ve watched ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’, you’ve already seen lots of magical New York – you just might not have realised it.

Woolworth Building – MACUSA headquarters

Location: 233 Broadway, Lower Manhattan

This one’s the big hitter. The stunning Woolworth Building doubled as the exterior of MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America).

With its neo-Gothic detailing and towering silhouette, it genuinely looks like it belongs in the wizarding world. While you can’t freely wander inside, seeing it from the street is more than enough to appreciate why filmmakers chose it, and obviously, snap some photos!

If wizarding politics were real, this is exactly where they’d be handled.

City Hall Park – magical chaos in plain sight

Location: Lower Manhattan

Several scenes were filmed around City Hall Park, where magical disturbances unfold against very ordinary New York backdrops. That contrast, spells and creatures in a recognisably everyday space, is part of what makes ‘Fantastic Beasts’ feel so excitingly mysterious.

It’s a great place to wander, sit for a moment and imagine Newt Scamander chasing a niffler coming into view.

Lower Manhattan streets – blink-and-you’ll-miss-it wizardry

Location: Financial District / Civic Center

Much of ‘Fantastic Beasts’ used the streets of Lower Manhattan for exterior shots, background action and transitions. Walking through this area, the architecture still feels early-20th-century enough to match the film’s 1920s setting.

It’s one of those “I didn’t realise this was filmed here” moments, until you start recognising corners, façades and street layouts from the film.

Brooklyn Heights Promenade – magical views (minus the CGI)

Location: Brooklyn Heights

While not a major action location, Brooklyn Heights was used for scenic establishing shots. The promenade offers sweeping views of Lower Manhattan that feel cinematic even without the magical creatures flying past.

It’s a quieter, more atmospheric stop – perfect for Fantastic Beasts fans looking for moody cityscapes instead of blockbuster big shots.

The New York buildings that feel like fantasy

The New York Public Library

If any building in New York feels magical, it’s this one.

The New York Public Library looks like it should contain enchanted manuscripts, secret passageways and at least one cursed object. Inside, it’s calm, grand and reverent – a place that makes you instinctively whisper.

Grand Central Terminal

At first glance, Grand Central is “just” a train station. But look again and you’ll notice:

  • The celestial ceiling (constellations included)

  • Whispering Gallery acoustics that feel… suspiciously magic

  • Hidden passageways and staircases everywhere

It’s exactly the kind of place where a magical entrance could exist and everyone would walk past it daily without noticing. Very muggle of us.

Looks pretty magic to me!

Museum of Broadway: theatrical magic counts

While not strictly wizarding, the Museum of Broadway absolutely earns its place here. Theatre is its own kind of magic – illusions, transformations, stories told in the dark. Not to mention the magical shows themselves.

If you love fantasy worlds, elaborate costumes and behind-the-scenes secrets, this attraction (included with New York Pass) scratches the same itch as a good spellbook and features enough sparkly costumes to fill any Yule Ball.

Old New York, hidden symbols and accidental magic

Part of the fun of magical New York is simply looking up. Top magical intrigues to lookout for:

  • Ornate gargoyles

  • Art Deco symbols

  • Buildings that look far older (or stranger) than their neighbours

Areas like Greenwich Village and Lower Manhattan feel especially atmospheric – perfect for wand-waving walks, even if your wand is just a coffee cup.

You can't convince me Broadway shows aren't at least a little bit magic!

Is New York secretly magical?

Officially? No.

Unofficially? Absolutely yes.

Between wizarding shops, film locations, enchanted-looking libraries and buildings that feel one magic word away from revealing their secrets, New York is a dream destination for witches, wizards and curious muggles alike.

And if you end your day sipping Butterbeer in Midtown, wand purchases tucked under your arm, quietly wondering if MACUSA is watching – congratulations. You’ve found magical New York.
