What you'll do

Explore the fascinating story behind this landmark synagogue and why it remains such an important place for the Jewish community on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

This remarkable building opened in the late 19th century, at a time when thousands of Jewish immigrants were making new lives in New York City. As the neighborhood flourished, so did the congregation – until the 1924 immigration restrictions led to a dramatic population decline, leaving the synagogue to slowly deteriorate over the decades.

By the 1970s, preservationists stumbled upon the neglected space and recognised its historic value. Their efforts eventually earned the site National Historic Landmark status in 1996 and kicked off an extensive, 20-year restoration. A dazzling new stained glass window was added during the process, helping to reimagine the space as a vibrant museum and cultural destination.

Step inside the striking neo-Moorish facade and you’ll be met with an extraordinary interior – think soaring domes decorated with Stars of David, elegant brass lighting, and a sweeping staircase that guides you through the sanctuary.

The museum also showcases a rich collection of letters, documents, and artifacts from the Eldridge Street congregation. But the true showstopper is the 16-foot circular stained glass window created by artist Kiki Smith and architect Deborah Gans. With swirling blues, turquoise tones, and a constellation of stars, it’s the piece everyone stops to admire – and usually can’t resist photographing.
